Psalm 23 is beautiful. It is rich with the image of the shepherd and what he does. Comforting, soothing words that we need to hear. But there is another side to the Good Shepherd, another side that we do not often hear about. This is a side that reminds us that the shepherd is not domesticated, but he is tough, and strong, and a mighty protector. The young boy David, fought and killed the bear and the lion, so a man with armor was nothing to Him. ( 1 Sam. 17:33-37

The Great Good Shepherd Jesus Christ is strong and mighty, for He battled Satan and sin and death and defeated them all. This Good Shepherd, this God-man, Jesus Christ, was more than brave and courageous, but He was victorious in His battle for us. How do you think it is that you can walk through the valley of the shadow of death and fear no evil? Because of the work of Jesus Christ for you!

Yes, the shepherd takes the sheep and carries them. He also protects them from the thief that comes to kill and destroy. We are weak, helpless creatures just as sheep are, suspect to all the threats of many and various enemies that threaten us daily. But we have the great protector in Jesus Christ, who died once for all for your sins and lives in eternity on the right hand of God, who will come again to judge the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. He fears no one or nothing and He has put His life on the line to save yours. So have no fear little flock...

This is the Good Shepherd...
